ORCHESTRA COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

The Henry Clay Orchestra has a long tradition of excellence in performance.  In order to continue this tradition and support the growth of the program, three performance classes and one AP Music Theory course are currently offered.

AP Music Theory meets 1st period and welcomes all musicians at Henry Clay.  Students in this course learn to analyze chords in compositions, complete simple rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic dictation, read and sing by sight simple melodic passages, recognize a variety of musical forms, and express musical ideas by arranging and composing according to the basic rules which govern tonal music composition.

The Advanced Chamber Music class meets 2nd period and is composed of students who demonstrate a capacity for rehearsing and performing chamber literature.  Members of this smaller class are admitted by audition.  Demonstrating a strong desire to focus on music, these students compete in KMEA All-State auditions, perform in KMEA Solo & Ensemble, and regularly perform standard and newer chamber works.

The Concert Orchestra meets 3rd period and welcomes all string players who have played at the middle school level and wish to continue playing in high school.  Students are strongly encouraged to participate in KMEA Solo & Ensemble.

Members of the Advanced Symphonic Orchestra are admitted by audition, and rehearse 4th period in a large group setting to perform advanced orchestral literature.  This group combines with the Henry Clay Chorus to perform on the winter concert.  Players are encouraged to participate in KMEA Solo & Ensemble and All-State auditions.

Each orchestra performs at least four concerts during the year as well as at KMEA Festival and any other venues that seem appropriate. The Henry Clay Orchestra consistently receives distinguished ratings at adjudicated events.
