Class Objective:

The Academic Mentoring Program is an advanced level independent study program which allows students to design their own class content from any subject area and to study under the direction of professional in the chosen field.  The program’s purpose is to allow students to pursue an idea beyond the opportunities provided in the regular classroom.

Class Expectations:

Meet individually with the facilitator once every two weeks for 15-20 minutes to update your progress.  Each student will schedule a regular meeting time.  Come prepared to have an intelligent discussion about your project. Have all required and completed paperwork at your meeting time.

Grading

Presentations-50% of total grade

Timelines-25% of total grade

Conferences-25% of total grade

Proposed Timeline

During the first individual meeting, the timeline will be discussed.  Be prepared to demonstrate and discuss when you and your mentor are in regards to the timeline.  Revisions might be required in your timeline.

Time Sheets: 50 Points-

These are due on a bi-weekly basis. There is a calendar located next to the Academy Office fro you to schedule yourself to meet with me once every two weeks.  These conferences will last about 15-20 minutes. You must work on your project for at least 6 hours each week, and one of these six hours should be with your mentor. Record the specifics of the activity, and be prepared to defend its validity. Your mentor should evaluate your progress every two weeks, sign, and comment.  This makes up the largest portion of your grade, because the quality of your project is determined by the TIME you put into it.

Presentations: 100 points

You will make 4 major presentations in class, throughout the course of the year. Attendance is required during the presentations. At the time of each presentation you will also hand in your Mentor’s Formal Evaluation of your progress and effort to that point.  A strong relationship with your mentor is essential; that is why it is called mentoring.

Your Presence is Required at the Following:

Presentation #2 Project Progress October 15, 2007-7:30 AM Theatre

  •     During this presentation you will describe your project to the class. Describe why you choose this project and this mentor, and describe what your final project will look like during the showcase in May.

Presentation #3 Rough Draft Jan. 14, 2008, 7:30 AM Theatre

  •       At this point you should have a very clear idea of what your final project will look like. You will present one point in full, so that we can get a glimpse of the polished project.

Presentation #4 March 17, 2008 Rubric Evaluations

  •       Rubric Evaluations explained.
