Topics
1. Research and identify 10 ACT and SAT test taking strategies. Include how incorrect answers are scored, how blank answers are scored. Is it better to guess or leave an answer blank?
2. Research 5 similarities and 5 differences between SAT and ACT. What subjects are tested on each test, what is the level of difficulty on each test? What percentage of each test is grammar, reading, geometry, calculus, algebra 2? What sciences are included in the ACT, what percentage of questions are earth science, biology, chemistry, physics? What is the level of difficulty of each test in each subject area?
3. Develop a list of 100 ACT schools and 100 SAT schools. What schools accept either test?
4. How do schools use the SAT essay, ACT essay? Contact 3 instate and 3 out of state schools and poll each school on how they use both the ACT and SAT essay. In the report identify the schools contacted and the position of the individual that you provided the information.
5. What is the common application? What colleges accept the common application? List 15 schools that require a supplement to the Common Application and give specific examples as to what the supplements require.
6. Research UL, UK, Eastern, Morehead, KSU, Murray, and Western as to tuition cost, ACT requirement, and other admission requirements. What scholarships and scholarship amounts are available at each school for students scoring an ACT of 25 or higher?
7. Research Centre, Transylvania, Georgetown College, Kentucky Wesleyan, Union College, Asbury College, Bellermine, and Thomas More as to tuition cost, ACT requirement, and other admission requirements. List the scholarships available at each school for students scoring an ACT of 25 or higher.
8. Develop a list of 10 most selective colleges and universities in the US, research admission criteria, and tuition expenses. List the scholarships available at each school for students scoring an ACT of 25 or higher.
9. Research and make a list of 25 colleges and universities within a 250 mile radius of Lexington, compare and contrast their enrollment size, tuition, and separate the schools as being urban, suburban, and rural. Do not include Centre, Transylvania, Georgetown College, Kentucky Wesleyan, Union College, Asbury College, Bellermine, Thomas More, UL, UK, Eastern, Morehead, KSU, Murray, Northern Kentucky University, and Western.
10. Research 25 selective or most selective colleges that require one or more essays on their application. Create a list 15+ essay prompts identifying the college offering each particular prompt.
11. What is the Free Application For Student Aid (FAFSA)? What is the data used for? How do you apply? When do you apply? What information is needed to apply?
12. Compare and contrast early decision and early action. Describe 3 advantages for each.
13. Research 8 college admission factors. For each requirement give concrete suggestions on how a student and increase the possibility of college admission by enhancing themselves in regards to the admission requirement.
14. PSAT and National Merit Scholarships. What are they, what do the scores mean, why? What is a good score?
15. Identify 5 schools that require or recommend an interview for admission. Identify 5 common mistakes that are made before, during, and after the interview process. Provide a list of potential academic interview questions that you might encounter in an interview.
16. Identify 15 potential non-college or university sponsored scholarships for which you might be eligible. List the qualifications for the scholarship, application process, and why you are eligible. The KEES scholarship is not to be included.
17. Research college visits. When to visit, what to see, what to ask, how to see, how to make arrangements for the visits, what not to ask, what is the role of the admission counselor?
18. Advanced Placement scores. What do the scores mean? How do they translate to college credit? Research 5 schools that accept all 3, 4, and 5 scores. Research 5 schools that accept only 5 scores. Do all schools allow you to bypass the course if you score a 5? How will the credit be applied to you college transcript?
19. Research 20 colleges or universities that offer an honors program. List the requirements for entrance into the honors program, the advantages of participating in the honors program, and the number of honors students. List contact information for each honors program.
20. Research the SAT 2. What are they SAT 2s? What subject tests are offered? Why would you want to take the SAT 2s? What colleges require the SAT 2s? When do you take the SAT 2s? How do you determine if which subject tests to take? How many subject tests do you take? Can you take the SAT and the SAT 2s on the same test date?
21. Research the Kentucky Governors Scholars Program. How and when do you apply? What do you need to apply? How are applications evaluated? Who at school is responsible for the applications? Interview one of the GSP participants from last year.
22. Community Service. Develop a list of 10 local organizations that provide opportunities for a substanded community service relationship, organizations that provide the opportunity to do more than work 2 hours every other month. Include the organization name, address, phone number, contact person, and web site (if available).
23. Unique Ideas for Community Service. Brainstorm and create a list of 5 or more unique ideas for original community service experiences. Ideas that are not part of on-going programs already established at Henry Clay High School. These ides might be ones that 1 or more students could develop and implement within the Henry Clay High School community that would serve the needs of the Henry Clay High School community and/or the Lexington community.
24. College Planners. Lexington has 4-5 individuals and companies that provide college planning services. Contact at least 3 college planners to identify the services they offer and the an estimate of the cost of their services. In your report include the names and contact information for the organizations that you have contacted and a summary of their services and costs.
