VISUAL ARTS CRITIQUE

 

Please use another sheet of paper to complete this assignment.  This sheet must be stapled to the front of the assignment.

 

DESCRIPTION

  1. What do you notice first when you look at the works?  Why?
  2. What kinds of color do you see?  How would you describe the colors?
  3. What shapes do you see?  What kind of edges do the shapes have?
  4. Are there lines in the works?  If so, what kinds of lines are they?
  5. What sort of texture do you see?  How would you describe them?
  6. What is the overall visual effect or mood of the works?

 

ANALYSIS

  1. How has the artist used colors and shapes within the works?  What is the effect of the colors and the shapes on the artwork?
  2. How has the artist used light in the works?  IS there the illusion of a scene with lights and shadows or does the artist use light and dark values in more abstract way?
  3. How has the overall effect or mood of the works been achieved by the use of elements of art and principles of design?

 

INTERPRETATION

  1. What do the works mean to you?
  2. How do they relate to you and your life?
  3. What is the artist’s statement in this work?
  4. Why do you think that the artist chose to work in this manner and makes these kinds of artist decisions?

 

JUDGEMENT

  1. Why do you think that this work has intrinsic value or worth?  What is the value that you find in the works?
  2. Rather than seeing the work as being very effective or without total value, does the work fall somewhere in-between?  What do you base this opinion on?  Explore your criticism of the work(s) using the elements of art and the principles of design.
